The Main Ten

Insights about Phil not plugged into board seem right on.
A good show to just play along with even if you just hitting the down low acoustically on a six string
I stopped to comment just having the PITB and wow that is really smoking---.Pretty cool that we get a PLAYIN' and DARK STAR here in the same set.
Hopefully, we are all Heads but it seems a truism that the toughest critics of the band tend by HOMEGROWN.
Anyway, I've got my pet peeves, likes and dislikes but my scale for the GD is in terms of discorporation, time travel and cosmic overdrive. Like true love--- words so often don't do justice--- and this from a person who enjoys communicating in written form..

My First Dead Concert
This was the first Grateful Dead show I ever went to. It was sold out, but some kind soul sold me their extra ticket for $5. Was the best 5 dollars I ever spent! This was by far the best Dead show I ever saw. Playing in the Band is just sublime this night. This is the Dead when they were at their best, and they would rarely be in as good a form in later years. This was one of the three best concerts of my life. Will never forget this show.

Psychedelic Signpost
There appear to be some fans of the version of Playin’ from this show. While an impressive and interesting standout from the limited recordings available from this particular night, I encourage you to check out the 5/21/74 version from the Edmundson Pavilion show at the Univ. of Washington in Seattle. Whether or not you are a fan of this song in any capacity whatsoever, allow me to direct you to 5/21/74 as an example of one of the most epic and seething psychedelic beasts of a jam (approx. 45 minutes of MADNESS) that is almost unprecedented post ‘68/’69 – even though we’re talking about the golden Flood/Mars Hotel era. Check it out…but be sure to buckle your seatbelt and bring something along to help get you through to the other side. You won’t be the same and you’ll appreciate the band’s ability to spin gold from straw on a tune with which Deadheads have a 50/50 love hate relationship! Trust me: it’s an epic wormhole of a ride! Cheers and enjoy

Come to think of it......
I was at this show. As I recall, it ended really early, like 11 pm or something due to some local rules or law or such. Can't wait to listen to it.

Playin in the f*&^% Band!!!!
Thank you reviewers for turning me on to this while I was toiling away in the depths of Stanley and Fox Theatres. The sound isn't perfect but woow! This Playing in the Band is the toppermost of the rockermost. It has just usurped 7/29/88;12/31/76;2.26.77; and some other Playin' that I can't think of right now for Numero Uno in my little red book. Spacephobics and Touchheads are asked to observe caution when listening. ;-)
It is my duty to get this back on the homepage to spread the word!

My Long Strange Trip Begins
This is a special show for me, my first. 33 years later & I'm still lovin' it. My first & ONLY Casey Jones, that escalates beyond the cosmos!! Listening to it now reminds me what treat that night was. The boys in full command of all their powers. A classic!!

PLAYIN - ITS ALL TRUE-definately best ever
This is the Joe Frazier of Playins - Sit back with the phones on and allow the Jerry's wawa and Phil's bass lines send you into stupidville.
* 2/22/73 U Of ILL, and of course The Hog Farm, 7/72 are the other heavyweights.
* What about the fierce Sugar Mag?

Ditto on the Playin'
This is my favorite version of Playin too, of the ones heard so far of course. Amazingly long and driven for '72; it shows that the tune had fully matured by the time of the Fall tour. I thought all the great versions were from '73 & '74 - wrong!

Playing in the Band!!!
Okay, to start off, this is the best damned Playin'!!! Blows every other version you've heard away!!!
The Truckin'>Dark Star has some neat jams, but is a little to unshaped for my taste (if that makes sense).
Broke-down is the best version I've heard, as well, but it cuts out near the end! A REAL bummer.

Show from my town!
This show, which is from my town, sounds great here besides a little hiss. I just have a question: "Brokedown Palace" cuts off at about
5:08 and it is not documented in the text file. It was a real bummer the first time I listened to it.
